What To Do in Maui?

It’s true what all the brochures say: Hawaii really is a vacation paradise. Yet of all the Hawaiian islands, Maui is truly one of the most spectacular. Of course, we live here so we might be biased; all we can do is invite you to come and see this amazing paradise for yourself!

Whether you are an avid hiker seeking an eco-tourism adventure or a beach-lover looking to relax and soak up the sun, the island of Maui has something for everyone. Your biggest problem will be choosing your adventures and figuring out how to fit it all into one vacation!

Here are just a few of our ideas for things to do while visiting the beautiful island of Maui.

Tours

Booking a tour is a great way to make sure you don’t miss a thing, while letting someone else do all the hard work! There are tons of different tour options, including private tours and large group tours, as well as basic sightseeing tours and special interest tours. The hard part for you is choosing! Consider:

  • Guided sightseeing tours: Travel the scenic road to Hana with stops to appreciate amazing views, gorgeous beaches, emerald green forests, waterfalls, and Maui’s ocean blowhole!

  • Helicopter tours: The views of Maui from the air are nothing less than spectacular! Explore the breath of the island, including the rainforest valleys and Maui’s volcanic formations.

  • Sunset dinner cruises: What’s more romantic than an amazing dinner while cruising on a calm ocean at sunset? And the views of the island are pretty great too!

  • Snorkeling, scuba, and/or fishing cruises: Specialty boating cruises are perfect for anyone looking to get up close and personal with Hawaii’s amazing ocean life!

  • Group walking and hiking tours: Walking and hiking through Maui’s amazing state and national parks is a great experience; a guided tour might be perfect for families and adventurers who aren’t comfortable exploring on their own.

Beaches

Did you know that Maui has 30 miles of beaches? Swimming, snorkeling, boogie boarding, bodysurfing, board surfing, or simply relaxing: no matter what you want from the beach life, a beach on Maui has your name on it! Here are just a few of our favorites:

  • Mokulei‘a Bay Beach

  • Honokahua Bay Beach (“D.T. Fleming Beach Park”)

  • Kapalua Bay Beach

  • Napili Bay Beach

  • Kahekili Beach Park

  • Ka‘anapali Beach

  • Kama‘ole I, II and III Beaches

  • Keawakapu Beach

  • Mokapu/Ulua Beach

  • Wailea Beach

  • Maluaka Beach

  • Makena State Park (“Big Beach” and “Little Beach”)

  • Baldwin Beach

  • Hamoa Beach

Golf

If you’re an avid golfer, why not check out one—or more—of Maui’s 14 highly-acclaimed golf courses, several of which were conceived of by pro course designers such as Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw! But of course the best part of golfing in Maui is the incredible scenery, with spectacular views of Maui’s coastlines and mountain forests, and even dramatic volcanic formations. While all of Maui’s golf courses offer both challenge and beauty, the more popular courses include the Gold, Emerald, and Blue courses at Wailea and the Planation and Bay courses at Kapalua.

Hiking and Camping Adventures

For the more adventurous traveler, Maui offers plenty of opportunity for amazing eco-tourism. From family-friendly day hikes to challenging overnight adventures, Maui’s state and national parks are best explored on foot! ‘Iao Valley State Park has over 4,000 acres with plenty of paved pathways and hiking trails through verdant forests and dramatic rock features like the Iao Needle, as well as glimpses into Maui’s rich history. Haleakala National Park, centered around the Haleakala Crater, is perfect for experienced adventures, with the Sliding Sands and Halemauu Trails winding around the crater summit at 10,000ft, the Pipiwai Trail with its numerous waterfalls, and the Hosmer Grove and Supply Trails meandering through dramatic native forests. Other phenomenal and more isolated hiking and camping areas include La Perouse Hoapili Trail and the Waihee Ridge Trail up the Lanilili Peak.

Exploring Maui’s forests, mountains, and ancient lava fields on foot is definitely a must-do for any eco-tourist. Be sure that you are properly prepared to enjoy your hiking and/or camping excursion by renting all the camping and hiking equipment you need to be safe while on the trails. The rental ‘kits’ available at Maui Camping Company come ready-made with (almost) everything you need for an easy day hike or a multi-day camping adventure: just bring clothes, food, and water!
