From towering volcanic peaks to broad sandy beaches: the amazing natural beauty of Maui is hard to miss! Certainly, a bus tour along the scenic Hana Highway or a short, easy walk is a great way to catch glimpses of Haleakala, the island’s highest peak, or the majesty of the pools and waterfalls of Ohe’o Gulch. But if you want to truly immerse yourself in Maui’s natural wonders, why not try camping in one of Maui’s amazing campgrounds! It’s easier than you think and one of the very best ways to appreciate all that Maui has to offer.

The idea of planning a camping trip on a faraway island can seem daunting. Choosing the right gear for an unknown destination—and one with seven distinct climate zones—can be difficult, and shipping all that gear can get expensive quickly. At Maui Camping Company, we have the solution: rent your camping gear right here on the island! Whether you want a luxury camping experience or a rugged natural challenge, our camping kits have everything you need for the perfect Maui camping experience. And we make the logistics easy too!

Camping in Maui: Where To Go

For families traveling with younger children or for those who enjoy getting close to nature but don’t want to give up the luxuries of home, “car camping” or “drive-in camping” is the ideal choice, and Maui offers numerous campground experiences! There are two drive-in camping areas in Haleakala National Park, for instance: Hosmer Grove located at 7,000ft between Kula and the Haleakala summit and Kipahulu at the “Seven Sacred Pools” on the Kuloa Point Trail. County and state park campgrounds such as Papalaua Wayside Park and Wai’anapanapa State Park are convenient, inexpensive, and absolutely gorgeous!

For the more adventurous and experienced camper, Maui also offers numerous “hike-in” camping areas. For instance, Haleakala National Park offers three hike-in camping areas at Holua, Kapalaoa, and the most remote area, Paliku. All three of these areas offer shared cabins requiring advance reservations, while Paliku and Holua offer tent sites with permit. It’s important to remember, however, that these sites are very isolated and while offering an amazing and up-close natural experience, they also require significant hiking and wilderness experience!

Our pre-made kits come packed with everything you need to make your camping vacation a success, from spacious and easy-to-set-up tents to warm and comfy sleeping bags and pillows!
