Hiking in Maui? 10 Trails You Can’t Miss!
If you’re interested in getting up close and personal with nature at its finest, there’s truly no more beautiful place to do it than the Hawaiian Islands, especially Maui. Whether you’re up for an easy stroll or seeking the adventure of a day-long or even a multi-day hiking trip, Maui is the place to do it!
Here are 10 of the very best trails in Maui that you really shouldn’t miss!
‘Iao Valley State Park
Richly steeped in Maui’s exciting history, ‘Iao Valley State Park is 4,000 acres of lush scenery and amazing rainforest, all easily accessible via 10 miles of paved pathways. With mellow walking trails, swimming holes, gorgeous waterfalls, and plentiful picnic areas, it’s perfect for anyone traveling with families and kids!
Haleakala’s Sliding Sands Trail, Haleakala National Park
The Sliding Sands Trails is an adventurous hike 10 miles to the summit of the Haleakala Crater. Passing the Haleakala Visitors Center, the Kapalaoa Cabin, the Paliku Cabin, and the Kaupo Gap, the trail reaches over 10,000 feet above sea level at its highest point! This is a strenuous hike not recommended for children or amateurs, but definitely a must-see for experienced adventurers.
Pipiwai Trail
Located just above the Seven Sacred Pools of Oheo in Haleakala National Park, the 4-mile Pipiwai Trail is a waterfall-lover’s dream come true! With amazing views, giant bamboo forests, and tranquil streams, the highlights of this scenic trail include Makahiku Falls and High Waimoku Falls. Pathways can be muddy and the trail involves numerous water crossings, so it’s not recommended for young children.
La Perouse Hoapili Trail
La Perouse is both a sacred archeological site and a geological wonder! The trail is 5.5 miles of strenuous hiking across ancient lava fields, with large and jagged lava formations left over from the eruption of Mount Haleakala in the 1970s. The trail meanders past ancient Hawaiian structures and ruins (so stay on the path!) and ends at a pristine bay with the amazing waters for which Maui is famous.
Twin Falls North Shore
When visiting the Twin Falls, be sure to bring your bathing suits, towels, and excellent walking shoes (as well as sunscreen and bug spray). Perfect for adventurers seeking the excitement of swimming holes (although caution is required!), Twin Falls has over two miles of dirt and gravel pathways that make strolling to the waterfalls and swimming holes a fun excursion for the whole family!
Waihee Ridge Trail
The Waihee Ridge Trail in Wailuku offers 5 miles of adventure up the Lanilili Peak, perfect for experienced hikers! At the summit, enjoy amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the Waihee Valley, and even the Island of Lana’I, if the weather cooperates. Cell phone coverage is spotty in this sparsely-populated area of the island, so be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks, hike with a buddy, and use good common sense when exploring this beautiful area.
Nakalele Blowhole and Sweetheart Rock
Observe one of nature’s wonders at the Nakalele Blowhole! Not appropriate for very young children and senior citizens, the trail at Nakalele Point takes visitors past tide pools, amazing rock formations, and incredible views of Maui’s fascinating West coast. But remember, once you hike down to the blowhole, don’t get too close to the edge and be careful of the slippery surfaces!
Hosmer Grove and Supply Trails
Located just inside Haleakala National Park, the Hosmer Grove and Supply Trails offer dramatic views and very pleasant hiking through some of Maui’s most amazing natural forests. Because the trails start at nearly 7,000 ft, it’s not at all surprising that the views are amazing too! However, the temperatures at this elevation can change quickly and without warning, so dress in layers and be prepared for a bit of everything.
Waihou Spring Trail Loop
Located in the Upcountry Olinda area, the Waihou Spring Trail Loop is 2.4 miles of amazing walking through mystical Maui forests, complete with Cypress, Eucalyptus, Hawaiian Koa, and Halapepe trees. The lookout point on an upper section of the ridge offers a spectacular view of Maui’s Northshore coastline. This is a great trail for families looking for a child-friendly hiking adventure.
Halemauu Trail
The Halemauu Trail is a challenging 10-mile adventure around the Haleakala Crater, starting at the west side of the crater summit, continuing down to the crater floor, then over to the east side of the crater. Although it starts calmly, this trail is a great way to experience a volcanic eco-zone with lava rocks and amazing views!
