The Best Time of Year to Visit Maui Hawaii

When thinking about some vacations, the weather patterns at your destination are of critical importance to the success of your vacation: after all, a ski vacation in Colorado isn’t going to be very fun in the middle of summer, while mid-winter might not be the best time for a beach get-away in Maine! The good news about planning a vacation to Maui is that you really don’t have to worry about what the weather will be like when you get there: it’s always warm here in Maui!

The year-round temperature in Maui averages about 80°; it might get a bit hotter at the beach and a bit cooler at night. The only time you really might want to think a bit about the temperature is if you are planning a hiking or camping trip to the top of Mount Haleakala, where it can get pretty chilly due to the extreme elevation. Maui does have two seasons: the dry season from April to October and the rainy season from November to March. If you are planning a vacation in winter, therefore, you may want to make sure that you pack or arrange to rent raingear; that being said, even in the rainy season, it usually doesn’t rain in one area for more than a couple of days at a time!

So what is the best time of year to visit Hawaii, and Maui in particular? Well, the answer to that question depends somewhat on your vacation goals!

Visiting Maui: High Season v. Off-Season

If you are planning an adventure get-away with lots of hiking and camping, you may want to avoid the rainy season and travel to Maui in the spring or fall when the weather in Maui is absolutely at its best. Luckily for you, spring (mid-April to mid-June) and fall (September to mid-December) also corresponds to the off season, when less people tend to travel to Maui. Crowds are usually lowest during these times, and the opportunities to save money are that much greater: hotel and airfare rates tend to be much lower during these times!

The high season in Maui generally corresponds to the months of the year when the weather is at its worst in other parts of the country: winter. Therefore, Maui is at its most crowded from mid-December through early April. Most hotels are booked to capacity during this time, and airfares correspondingly higher. So if you are looking to escape the winter blues in your hometown with a tropical getaway, it’s important to book your reservations early and to understand that you may not find many deals.

One important note: while April is generally considered off season, the last week of April is an exception. Several major holidays in Japan are all celebrated at this time, the so-called Golden Week, so many Japanese tourists use this opportunity to travel to Hawaii. So if you are seeking to avoid crowds, it may be beneficial to book your holiday to avoid this specific week.

The Best Time of Year for Hiking and Camping in Maui

As noted, the weather in Maui in the spring and fall are absolutely wonderful, falling at the end and beginning of the rainy season, yet not at the height of the summer heat. That being said, if you can handle the heat, summer can also be a fantastic time for an adventure vacation, when the trails are sure to be driest. The key to ensuring that you have a fun and safe adventure vacation is to know what you can expect from the weather and be prepared accordingly.
